Taxi and private hire replacement: what you will actually get

If you drive a plated taxi or private hire vehicle, an ordinary hire car is useless to you: the replacement must be plate-ready — licensable for your council area or already licensed — so your working income continues. Specialist taxi-replacement fleets exist for exactly this, and the supply is dominated by the vehicles the trade itself runs.

Which models count as like-for-like for a plated vehicle?
A vehicle that can lawfully do your job in your licensing area: age and emissions rules, plating requirements and council-specific conditions all bind the match, which is why taxi replacement runs through specialist fleets rather than general hire stock. Tell the hire company your licensing authority at first contact — it is the single fact that determines what can be supplied.
What will I not be given?
Not an unplated car "to keep you mobile" as a substitute for your livelihood — mobility and licensed work are different needs, and the replacement must serve the second. Hackney-specific supply (wheelchair access, purpose-built vehicles) is scarcer than PH saloon supply, and sourcing time reflects that.
